How to get here
The museum at Chappel and Wakes Colne Station, is in the village of Chappel and Wakes Colne - about 8 miles from the centre of Colchester.
We are located on the Sudbury to Marks Tey branch railway line where Greater Anglia operate an hourly service seven days per week throughout the year. Direct trains can be taken from Sudbury, Bures or Marks Tey to the museum. Marks Tey has an excellent mainline connection with regular trains from London, Colchester and Ipswich.
Please visit the National Rail website for up-to-date train times and fare prices.
The museum has ample parking along the station entrance road.
Coming from Ipswich, Chelmsford or London (Via A12)
Leave A12 at Junction 26 (Colchester Zoo turn-off) and follow the A1124 towards Halstead. After around 5 miles you will see a large railway viaduct - proceed under this and turn right at the cross roads. We are a short distance up the hill in the railway station on the right marked by the British Rail double arrow logo.
Coming from Colchester (through town)
Follow the signs through the town to join the A1124 towards Halstead. After around 5 miles you will see a large railway viaduct - proceed under this and turn right at the cross roads. We are a short distance up the hill in the railway station on the right marked by the British Rail double arrow logo.
Coming from Sudbury
Leave the town via Cornard Road and follow the road around 6 miles through Bures. On leaving Bures, take first right towards Mount Bures and proceed up-hill over the railway level crossing. Follow the road for about 3 miles. After going over the hump back bridge, follow road another 500 metres and we're located in Station Road on the left. (If you've got as far as the crossroads/viaduct - you've gone too far!)
First Essex Bus and Hedingham Omnibuses operate services to Chappel and Wakes Colne Post Office (five minutes walk from the Museum up the hill) every hour Mondays to Saturdays (routes 88 and 88A). These routes operate from Colchester Bus Station via Chappel and Wakes Colne to Halstead. (Colchester Bus Station is situated in the town centre). Network Colchester also operate some limited services via Chappel.
